Achieving a smooth self-levelling screed finish depends largely on proper preparation. Flowing levelling screeds are frequently used in Surrey home improvements to flatten floors, smooth subfloors, or cover underfloor heating systems. If the base surface is not properly prepared, however, problems such as poor bonding or cracking may occur.
1) Inspect and repair the subfloor
Check the entire area carefully for damage or instability.
- Concrete floors: remove dust, laitance, and weak surface layers through sanding or mechanical cleaning.
- Tiled floors: make sure tiles are secure. If many are loose, removing them may be the safest approach.
- Timber floors: levelling screed should not be poured directly onto wood. Fix loose boards and install a rigid board system first.
Fill cracks, holes, and uneven areas with suitable repair mortar before applying levelling compound.
2) Clean and prime the surface
Self-levelling screed requires a clean surface to bond properly. Remove dust, grease, paint, and adhesive residues.
Use the appropriate primer:
- Acrylic or SBR primer for absorbent substrates.
- Grit bonding primer for non-absorbent surfaces such as tiles.
Allow the primer to dry completely before pouring.
3) Install edge strip and set levels
Fit foam perimeter edging around the room to allow for expansion. Use a laser level or markers to set the correct screed height.
4) Mix and pour
Mix the levelling compound to the exact ratio recommended by the manufacturer. Pour evenly and roll with a spiked roller to release trapped air. Maintain a stable temperature and allow the screed to cure undisturbed for at least 24 hours.
